Idunno, maybe it's knowing what he looks like now, but I have a strange feeling the original MK2 sprite had black eyes because it was a dark shadow covering his beady eyes, since they weren't glowing yet....right now he reminds me of Batou from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Aside from that, it doesn't look bad at all. I like the shading styles definitely
